🐾 Truckee’s Best Dog-Friendly Trails and Parks

A Local Realtor’s Guide to Living Your Best Pet-Friendly Life

Hi, I’m Cole Mizak, a Truckee real estate agent with Compass—and a proud dog dad. If you're like me, your dog isn't just a pet, they're family. And if you’re considering relocating or just moved into one of the Truckee homes for sale, you’re probably wondering: Where can I take my pup to stretch their legs and enjoy the fresh mountain air?

Good news: Truckee is a paradise for dogs. Here's a local's guide to the top dog-friendly trails and parks around town. Whether you live here already or you're still looking for your forever home, these spots will help you and your four-legged friend feel right at home.

🥇 1. Martis Creek Trail

This easy, scenic trail just outside of Truckee is a hidden gem. Dogs are welcome on-leash, and the views of the Sierra Nevadas are unbeatable. It’s peaceful, flat, and perfect for older dogs or a mellow morning walk.

📍 Location: Near Martis Dam Road
🐶 Dog-Friendly: Leash required
🌲 Bonus: Great for bird watching and picnics

🥈 2. Truckee River Legacy Trail

This paved, multi-use trail is a local favorite. It winds along the river and is a great spot for jogging with your pup or riding bikes while they trot alongside. There are water spots along the way for dogs to cool off in the summer.

📍 Location: Runs from downtown Truckee to Glenshire
🐶 Dog-Friendly: Leash required
🚴‍♂️ Bonus: Great for families, bikers, and strollers

🥉 3. Waddle Ranch Preserve

Tucked near Martis Valley, this lesser-known trail system is a dream for nature lovers. There’s open space, forested trails, and plenty of room to roam. Leashes are required, but your pup will thank you for the adventure.

📍 Location: Off Highway 267, near Martis Camp
🐶 Dog-Friendly: Leash required
🦌 Bonus: Wildlife sightings and wildflowers in spring

🏞️ 4. Tahoe Donner Trail System

Living in Tahoe Donner? You’ve hit the jackpot. With over 60 miles of trails, many of them are open to dogs, especially in the off-season. Some winter routes even allow snowshoeing or skijoring with dogs.

📍 Location: Throughout Tahoe Donner
🐶 Dog-Friendly: On-leash, with some off-leash areas
❄️ Bonus: Year-round access, including snowy adventures

🐕 5. Truckee Regional Dog Park

Sometimes, your dog just needs to run full throttle. This fenced-in dog park has separate sections for big and small dogs, agility equipment, and shaded seating for humans. Great for social pups (and people).

📍 Location: 12200 Joerger Dr, Truckee, CA
🐶 Dog-Friendly: Off-leash inside the park
🎾 Bonus: Community vibes and friendly locals

Why Dog Owners Love Living in Truckee

Truckee isn’t just dog-friendly—it’s dog-first. Nearly every coffee shop has a water bowl outside. Local breweries welcome leashed pets. And many of the Truckee homes for sale are near trail systems or open space. If you’re looking for a town where dogs are part of the community, Truckee is it.

As a Truckee realtor, I’ve helped countless families—and their furry friends—find homes near the trails and open spaces they love. Whether it’s a cabin in Tahoe Donner, a modern home in Gray’s Crossing, or a cozy condo near downtown, I can help you sniff out the perfect spot.
