Lake Tahoe Cole Mizak March 5, 2026
If you’re searching for the best private golf communities around Lake Tahoe and Truckee, you’re really searching for more than a golf course. You’re looking for a lifestyle. You want privacy, strong long-term value, beautiful architecture, four-season access, and a community that feels right the minute you drive through the gate.
I’m Cole Mizak with Compass, and as a Lake Tahoe real estate agent, I spend a lot of time helping buyers compare the area’s top luxury communities. For some clients, the priority is a championship course and a tight-knit club culture. For others, it’s easy access to skiing, a lake amenity, tax advantages, or newer custom homes. The right answer depends on how you want to live. Current details on these communities and my brokerage profile are reflected in the sources cited below.
Below are the private golf communities I believe deserve the most attention if you’re serious about luxury Lake Tahoe homes for sale and Truckee-area golf living.
When buyers ask me which community delivers the most complete luxury lifestyle in the Tahoe-Truckee region, Martis Camp is always part of the conversation.
Martis Camp is a private luxury community in Truckee known for its Tom Fazio-designed golf course, private ski access to Northstar via the Martis Camp Express Chairlift, members-only ski lodge, Lake Tahoe Beach Shack, Family Barn, and a strong focus on multigenerational ownership. The community also markets homes, homesites, and off-market opportunities, which makes it especially important for buyers who want access to both listed and private inventory.
Why buyers love it:
Martis Camp works exceptionally well for buyers who want an all-in lifestyle. In one ownership experience, you get golf, skiing, lake access, dining, family amenities, and one of the strongest luxury brands in the region.
Best fit for:
Buyers who want a legacy property, a high-end club environment, and a community that checks nearly every lifestyle box.
Lahontan has long been one of the most respected private golf communities in Truckee. It offers a more understated, classic mountain feel than some newer luxury developments, and that’s exactly why many buyers love it.
Lahontan Golf Club is a private Truckee club centered around golf and club amenities, and community sources describe it as an award-winning golf community with fine dining, fitness, pools, tennis, trails, and a broad camp-style amenity mix. It’s also widely known in the market for its large homesites, custom homes, and established reputation within Martis Valley.
Why buyers love it:
Lahontan feels private, refined, and established. A lot of my clients are drawn to its mature setting, timeless architecture, and sense of calm compared with busier resort-style environments.
Best fit for:
Buyers who value privacy, architectural consistency, larger parcels, and a traditional private club atmosphere.
Schaffer’s Mill offers a different energy than Martis Camp or Lahontan. It’s still upscale, but it tends to feel more casual, active, and family-forward.
The community describes itself as a four-season family community between historic Truckee and Lake Tahoe, with golf, racquets, fitness, and vacation-oriented amenities. Schaffer’s Mill positions itself around gathering, recreation, and year-round use, which makes it appealing to buyers who want luxury without an overly formal feel.
Why buyers love it:
Location is a big advantage here. You’re close to Truckee, close to Northstar, and close to the lake. I often recommend Schaffer’s Mill to buyers who want a strong amenity package and easier day-to-day usability for the whole family.
Best fit for:
Buyers who want a private club community with a social atmosphere, convenient access, and a more relaxed mountain-luxury vibe.
If you’re looking on the Nevada side, Clear Creek Tahoe deserves serious attention.
Clear Creek Tahoe is a private mountain and golf community on the eastern slope of the Carson Range. The community says it spans 1,576 acres, sits about 20 minutes from Incline Village and Heavenly, includes a Coore & Crenshaw golf course, and is about 90% sold out. It also highlights its new clubhouse, Twin Pines lake amenity, and the Nevada advantage of no state income tax.
Why buyers love it:
For many of my Nevada-focused clients, Clear Creek hits a sweet spot. You get newer luxury development, a private golf experience, a quieter setting, and the financial appeal that often comes with Nevada residency.
Best fit for:
Buyers who want newer custom-home opportunities, privacy, strong club infrastructure, and the Nevada tax story as part of the decision.
Glenbrook is a different kind of private golf option, and that’s what makes it special.
Glenbrook Club highlights its historic character and describes its course as a pristine 100-year-old golf course. Golf industry sources identify it as a private 9-hole facility on Lake Tahoe’s east shore. While it doesn’t offer the same large-scale resort amenity profile as Martis Camp or Clear Creek, it makes up for that with heritage, exclusivity, and a rare old-Tahoe feel.
Why buyers love it:
Glenbrook appeals to buyers who care less about a sprawling resort setup and more about privacy, tradition, east shore prestige, and being part of one of Tahoe’s most storied enclaves.
Best fit for:
Buyers who want historic Lake Tahoe character, east shore exclusivity, and a quieter private-club setting.
As a Lake Tahoe realtor, I tell clients not to start with the house. Start with the lifestyle.
Here are the questions that matter most:
Do you want Truckee convenience or Nevada tax advantages?
Is golf the main priority, or do skiing and lake access matter just as much?
Do you prefer an established community or a newer development?
Are you looking for a custom homesite, a move-in-ready home, or off-market options?
Do you want a formal private club feel or a more relaxed family atmosphere?
Those answers usually narrow the search quickly.
One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is assuming all luxury golf communities around Tahoe feel the same. They do not. Martis Camp feels very different from Lahontan. Clear Creek Tahoe feels very different from Glenbrook. Even if home prices overlap, the ownership experience can be completely different.
That’s why working with a local Lake Tahoe real estate agent matters. A good search is not just about scrolling Lake Tahoe homes for sale online. It’s about understanding community culture, club access, location tradeoffs, seasonal use patterns, and how each neighborhood fits your long-term goals.
If your goal is the broadest luxury lifestyle package, Martis Camp is hard to beat. If you want classic Truckee private club living, Lahontan remains one of the strongest choices. If you want a more social and flexible family environment, Schaffer’s Mill stands out. If Nevada matters, Clear Creek Tahoe should be on your shortlist. And if you value legacy, privacy, and historic east shore character, Glenbrook is worth a very close look. These distinctions align with the amenities and positioning described by each community and related brokerage information.
No matter which direction you’re leaning, the best opportunities often come from matching the right buyer to the right community before the search gets too broad.
If you’re comparing private golf communities or looking for the best Lake Tahoe homes for sale, I’d be glad to help you narrow the options and create a strategy around your goals.
