Massive Winter Storm to Hit Lake Tahoe: Travel Tips & Safety Advice from a Local Realtor

Lake Tahoe Cole Mizak January 31, 2025

As a dedicated Lake Tahoe real estate agent, I want to ensure that all residents and visitors are well-prepared for the significant winter storm forecasted for this weekend. Staying informed and taking necessary precautions are crucial for your safety during this period.

Upcoming Storm Details

Starting Friday, January 31, 2025, a series of strong atmospheric river events will impact the Sierra Nevada region, including Lake Tahoe. Initially, expect heavy rain at lower elevations, transitioning to substantial snowfall at higher elevations as the weekend progresses. The National Weather Service has issued several advisories:

  • Winter Weather Advisory: From 4 a.m. January 31 to 10 p.m. February 1, above 7,000 feet, anticipate wet snow with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, and up to 20 inches above 8,000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 90 mph.

  • Lake Wind Advisory: From 12 p.m. January 31 to 7 p.m. February 1, expect southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, leading to waves of 2 to 3 feet on the lake.

  • Winter Storm Watch: From 4 a.m. February 2 to 10 p.m. February 3, above 7,000 feet, heavy wet snow is expected, with accumulations of 1 to 2 feet and winds gusting up to 90 mph.

For more detailed information, you can refer to the National Weather Service's alerts for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area.

Winter Travel Safety Tips

If you plan to travel during this period, please consider the following safety recommendations:

  1. Check Road Conditions: Before departing, monitor the latest weather forecasts and road conditions. Websites like Caltrans provide up-to-date information on highway statuses and chain requirements.

  2. Prepare Your Vehicle:

    • Tire Chains: Carry tire chains and be familiar with their installation, as they may be mandatory in certain areas.
    • Emergency Kit: Equip your vehicle with essentials such as blankets, water, non-perishable snacks, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit.
    • Fuel: Maintain a full gas tank to avoid running out during unexpected delays.
  3. Drive Cautiously:

    • Speed: Reduce your speed to accommodate slippery conditions.
    • Distance: Increase the following distance between your vehicle and others to allow ample stopping time.
    • Braking: Apply brakes gently to prevent skidding.
  4. Stay Informed: Utilize resources like the Caltrans Highway Information Network ((800) 427-7623) for real-time updates.

  5. Avoid Unnecessary Travel: If possible, postpone travel plans until conditions improve to ensure your safety.

Community Support

As a committed Lake Tahoe realtor, I care deeply about the well-being of our community. If you or someone you know needs assistance during this storm, please don't hesitate to reach out. Together, we can navigate these challenging conditions safely.

Stay safe and take care,
