Now the community is a small mountain town with Old West charm and lots of energy and fun.
A blend of rustic Old West charm and modern-day luxury just minutes away from Lake Tahoe
Truckee began in 1863 as a waystation for wagons crossing the Sierra, but it grew quickly, becoming home to a railroad station in just a few years. Now the community is a small mountain town with Old West charm and lots of energy and fun for residents and visitors alike. Skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, and hiking are all popular activities, depending on the time of the year, but its rich Native American and pioneer history make the museums just as entertaining as time spent outside.
Truckee is also very close to other Tahoe towns, providing easy access to casinos, golf courses, and more, but residents generally embrace Truckee’s offerings. The restaurants are top-notch, offering a variety of cuisine, and there are a number of small boutiques providing a luxurious shopping experience.
Truckee is a small town at its core, despite the wealth of activities that draw visitors to the area, so residents benefit from the charming, tight-knit community. The casinos in towns just over the border provide a glittering nightlife, but Truckee has managed to retain its calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Truckee’s hottest nightlife spot is Bar of America, a casual, rustic bar and grill with a menu featuring black-and-tan ribs, beer-steamed mussels, and other delicious bar food to match their specialty cocktails, wine, and beer selection. The bar features live music a few nights a week, as well as other periodic special events. Moody’s is another bar and grill with live music and a spectacular menu, offering dishes like flatbreads, steak, and gourmet burgers.
For date night, go to Pianeta, a quaint old-world Italian kitchen, which serves sausage tagliatelle, lamb agnello with mint pesto, and a phenomenal tiramisu. Everything down to the pasta is made fresh with high-quality ingredients, resulting in plates that are not only beautiful and delicious but also healthy.
In the mornings, head to Squeeze In for an amazing breakfast. The menu includes omelets stuffed with everything and anything you can imagine, biscuits, and stuffed french toast, so any appetite can be appeased.
One of the most popular things to do in Truckee is hike along one of the many trails, particularly the Truckee River Legacy Trail. Stretching nearly 10 miles, it’s an easy trail for new hikers, but the distance increases the challenge a bit.
The Donner Memorial State Park takes visitors into the Sierra Nevada mountains for hiking, snowshoeing, and more. The on-site visitor center provides insight into the people who have previously traveled through the area from the Native American tribes to the infamous Donner Party. Donner Lake offers fishing, a beautiful beach, and some watersport options.
Skiing is one of the most popular things to do in the area, and Truckee is home to four major ski resorts – the Northstar Ski Resort, Boreal, Sugar Bowl, and the Tahoe Donner Ski Resort. Each offers a variety of slopes for every skill level, instructors to teach new skiers some basic techniques, and a toasty warm lodge for when you need to defrost over a mug of hot chocolate.
For the days when you’re not sure what you want to do, just head to downtown Truckee. The area has art galleries, wine tastings, and adorable shops, so you’re guaranteed to find something that looks interesting.
Truckee is served by the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, known for its diversity and high reading and mathematic proficiency.
